We did an international adoption through ATWA and had no problems at all. It's unfortunate that 1 person can have 1 bad experience (and we don't even know their whole story) and post it all over the internet, and things can be untrue. The agency is very small so if you're expecting "big" agency things, you won't get them. But everything went smoothly with our adoption. You do have to take ownership at times for your process, but I believe that's true with every agency - they have so many families and cases - you can't expect to be #1 just because you're you! :) Everyone was very nice and helpful and we keep in touch with the other families we met thru our program - everyone has been happy with ATWA.
And yes, they have a very valid and legal Japan program, it's right there on their web site.
It was a wonderful experience to work with ATWA! Everything was handled professionally from homestudy to placement and we can't thank them enough! The negative comments posted here are suspicious. 5 stars for ATWA!
This agency promised me that a birthmother in Japan would select me for a open adoption. My DH and I are both caucasian. ATWA informed us this was no problem and that it was all "legal" Now I hear that the birth mother is changing her mind and wants more money.
Are open adoptions in Japan legal? Why is it SO expensive?
Does the birth mother have the right to change her mind after we have paid so much for her medical and other expenses?
Someone help us this seems so unfair and illegal. Why are the Japanese dealing with this agency?
I used ATWA for my China homestudy, and last summer for my I-171H renewal, and probably next fall for my I-171H renewal again. (*SIGH*)
Their social worker Annette is A #1, and their office staff is helpful and fast.
Plus, they offer clients really valuable training events for free, and non-clients can pay a small fee and attend them too. I have taken friends using other agencies, and everyone thought the training was great.
:)

I was very happy with ATWA and would highly recommend them! They are a small but ethical agency and really care about children. I gave them a 4 on communication because even though I always received medical updates and pictures, I would have to sometimes email or call to see how the case was progressing. that is my only minor complaint but otherwise they were great! Amy was my caseworker but isn't there any more but Cara is also a sweetheart :)
