We had a very positive experience adopting a baby daughter through ICIA. ICIA Director Lori Bollman gave accurate information regarding what was required procedurally (exactly how to notarize, certify, and seal documents) and honored the payment schedule outlined in the contract (in contrast to our previous adoption agency). Lori was also very empathetic about any delays.
ICIA ground staff in Guatemala (social worker, lawyer and foster mother) were all wonderful. The legal fees while high by our standards were on the lowest end of what is asked for in Guatemala.
Our one concern has been getting medical history information and other information our child may need one day from the birthmother. Also, ICIA does not offer follow up support services for families who adopt through them in our region - Otherwise we would give them a 5 star rating.
Some may find the ICIA Christian verbage a little trite, but Lori was professional and ethical in the way she conducted her business with us. Hence the religious sentiments did not ring hollow as they sometimes can with companies/ organizations that appear to exploit the good will of people of faith for commercial gain.
We have a beautiful, healthy, well-adjusted (so far) baby girl from Guatemala and we are grateful to ICIA for their part.
Our sympathies are with the many families who are suffering great pain right now (May 2008) due to the procedural mayhem caused by the change-over to the system that seeks to be compliant with the Den Hague Treaty on International Adoptions.
