My husband and I are totally dazed. We can't believe an agency can take our life savings then close and actually get away with it. I wonder how many couples are in the same boat? It will take us years to replace the money lost. We worked so hard to save the money with hopes of adopting and starting a family. We are unsure where to go next. I look at all of these agencies posted on this site and all of them have many negative comments posted against them. How do you choose? Honestly, who do you trust again? We now know that adoptive parents have no protection under our laws. The contracts that we sign don't protect us. They are protection for the agencies. Does anyone know of a trustworthy agency that deals with domestic adoptions?
You are not alone. As you can see from other posts, there are many of us on the same boat and many more who do not even post here, I am sure. We know how hard it is to save money and then lose it like this not to mention the dreams put on hold and we are angry as well but we have to be proactive, get informed and move forward. That's the best thing I think you can do.
As far as choosing an agency, I suggest you talk to others who have adopted from the same place you intend to adopt from-there are many Yahoo! groups that you can join and also ask friends and family to see if they know of people who have done the same and can provide info. I think personal referrals are better than internet ratings. Even then, there is no fool-proof method-we used CAII in '05 with few/little issues and hence why we used them again now and look what happened.
Also make sure to check the agency's tax information, that also gives you an idea of their financial standing, size and operations.
As far as what has happened with CAII, I don't expect them to be refunding any monies and you can see that there is discussion of a class action lawsuit here and you can also file a criminal complaint online with the state attorney of AZ (the link is posted under the Commonwealth link on this site).
