They have been shut down. They violated ICPC laws, failed to get medical treatment for injured children, they encouraged preadoptive parents to hide children where the adoption is being contested. The list goes on. I have a copy of the letter that was sent to them on 3/10/08. They are not allowed renew their license and their license has been revoked.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, 3-19-2008, you are incorrect. The agency is still open at this time. The State of OH does not want to renew their license, but they are still open.
The allegations you mentioned need to be addressed by the agency.
You sound like one angry person & I feel sorry for you.
Don't feel sorry for me. I am hardly angry. I am enjoying that this agency is finally going down. This agency is very guilty of hurting many people. I hope they do jail time. Families have been hurt by this agency. They will not be open for long. The sad part about all of this is that they will shut down but will reopen under another name. Its always that way.
It is clear that you as an individual have many unresolved issues around your adoption. If you were to truly get to know the agency you choose to randomly slander, you would realize that they advocate for birthparents more than any other Ohio program. Many of the complaint you see here on th site are related to adoptive parents who had a birthmother change their mind. ACW supports birthparents decisions and thier right not to place thier child. They also work VERY closely with community orgainzations that assist women in parenting their kids. As you know it can be difficult for AP when birthmother changes her mind. They often are angered and chose to blame the agency, and feel like the agency only supports the birthmother. ACW has placed nearly 1500 children 500 or so from birthfamilies. Amazingly, we only hear of one case here that is negative. Congrats to ACW for supporting BP's and having nearly 500 birthpartents feeling supported and comfortalble with their decision to place. THe Bennett case is unfortunate but, on rare occasions this can happen. Believe it or not...most BP are happy with their decision... and most adoptees aren't disturbed about being adopted. The well-adjusted adoptees just don't obsess over blogs and slander agencies in their free time.
First of all, we are NOT "bp's." The last time I looked, that stood for "British Petroleum." We are natural mothers and I can show you a massive number of such mothers that are not happy with the fact that we were coerced out of our children by a sly and sneaky institution and its minions. We are legion and we are being heard, so don't for an instant, believe that we are happy. Even the ones who say they are, say so in order to keep that open adoption from slamming shut in their faces. We are human mothers with a mother's heart beating in each of our millions of breasts...we are not "Juno's" (which is so unrealistic as to be ridiculous) and no, we are NOT happy, we do regret and most of us were either hoodwinked, coerced, forced or all three. While you are taking your barge up the river of adoption denial, we are speaking out and being heard.
And Evelyn Bennett had better be back with her real family very soon.
You really do have anger issues. Anyone reading these posts can see it. And you are a BP.. Birth mother, Biological mother, either term will do. Call yourself a natural mother or real mother but that is what all moms are, even us adoptive mothers. I'm my child's natural mother, real mother, but not her birth mother. Why does the term bother you so much? There are many adoptive parents that have adopted for what I consider all the "right" reasons. We have biological kids and we really couldn't afford to adopt a child but felt very led by God to make a difference in the life of a child that no one wanted. We have made numerous sacrifices to adopt that have turned out not to be sacrifices at all because we have been so blessed by all our children. Quit bunching everyone into groups because you really don't know what you are talking about. Thank God for all the parents that want to adopt. Thank God there are so many of us that want the kids that no one else wants. And lastly, unless you were in the room with miss Stephanie and the counselor, you really have no idea what happened. Evelyn Bennett is with her real family and to do anything to disrupt this little girl's life would be criminal. That's why we have laws. Don't like the laws? Shut up and try to change them.
I always get a kick out of people using God in their posts and then treating someone so "UNChristian."
THE AGENCY TESTIFIED AGAINST THE RETURN OF EVELYN BENNETT. The child is NOT with her REAL family, the child has been legally kidnapped. Her mother contested the adoption 5 days later and proved it in court. I have the papers RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.
YES this law needs reforming, I, along with MANY others are working on changing those laws, changing laws takes time. ASIDE from whats legal and not, there is also an ethical and moral obligation to any child you bring into the home to do WHATS RIGHT.
That didn't happen in this situation. That is shameful and there will be justice. Few people appear to have a conscious when it comes to adopting anymore. That my friends, is a terrible, terrible shame.
Adoptees deserve full unconditional access to their unaltered birth certificates. Adoptees deserve to be treated like equal citizens. We are NOT commodities. We are NOT something to make a business off of. We will expose those who have violated us.
Who said anything about being Christian. I'm Jewish. And what exactly was stated that was unGodly? A little rude? Yes. I should have used be quiiet instead of shut up.
and I too was adopted. Was it all good? Absolutely not. But I am thankful for 2 things. One, I was not aborted and two, there was someone out there that wanted me.
Don't you just love the typical belittling statement of the "bad adoption experience!" I did not have a bad adoption experience until I researched my own adoption and discovered the many coercive, lying, and deceitful tactics used by agencies just like this one. Sorry that just doesn't cut it. I am not the one who is on the verge of being shut down. I am not the one who has extremely sloppy paperwork. I am not the one who placed a child in an uncertified foster care home. I am not the one that let a child get abused by a foster parent.
By the way, in Texas, it is considered bad ethics for an adoption agency to adopt within their own agency. Bad ethics. Gets ya shut down here.
Only one case, I believe there are several others that report badly about this agency. I have read bad reviews and complaints all over the internet concerning this agency. There are much better and ethical agencies out there. Sadly this agency is not one. They forget that they answer to us, the adoptees, the natural parents and the adoptive parents for their actions.
OK - ACW supports birth parents' right to stop the adoption process because it's the LAW! One of the ones they followed, too. Not following that would get them shut down even quicker than they already are.
They let a minor make a major life-altering, damaging decision without calling in her parents and when she did change her mind, they (their attorney) told the adopters to take that baby and run and hide. FACTS!
That's how they got by at the first hearing...stating what was legal while dancing around what is ethical and right.
If the Bennett case was the only one that showed how devious these folks are, that would be enough for me. But there are other situations that are listed on that long letter. They won't be the first agency to be shut down for taking advantage of a potential adopters covetous greed for a baby and the vulnerability of a young mom. Let's hope they aren't the last.
Sorry, you misunderstood me. I meant it is the law they have to follow to represent the birth mother; the post above implied it was this wonderful, humanitarian thing they're doing to represent birth moms, but if they are doing it, I think it's only because they have to. And that is certainly open to debate. I was being sarcastic and I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Earlier today I wrote about this very thing.....among some other issues regarding adopters and encouraging them to beware....some hours later my post has not yet been listed......

No they don't respect natural mothers. Explain to me why Stephanie Bennett did not have her child returned even when the court ordered it. The courts in Ohio ORDERED IT. They told those "adoptive parents" to run with Baby Evelyn.
The people who have Evelyn Bennett are not adoptive parents. They have not adopted Evelyn, were never approved as foster parents, and cannot complete the adoption of Evelyn until the case with her mother is settled to the satisfaction of the court. Since they were not approved for Foster Care, they are in violation of the law in Ohio, and have fled the state with a child who is in their care illegally.
You may have noticed that there are blanks in the letter from the state. Rick Armon stated that those were erasures that were in there when he received the letter. That means that all of the complaints are not there, and my assumption is that those are of cases, like Stephanie's, that are still open and still pending.
What we who have been involved with Stephanie Bennett know is that her case is as clear a case of coercion and abuse and violations of ethics as any. Knowing that things are facts and proving them in a court of law are two separate issues. Stephanie is young and naive, and the people with whom she was dealing were older, more sophisticated and had a strong incentive to exploit her and her child and to be sure that they broke no laws that could be proven. However, there are certainly and clearly ethical violations and the tone from the letter from the State of Ohio indicates that their disregard for the law is a pattern.
One also must remember that the attorney for the agency is readily available to them, since he is the husband of one of the sisters. It is not as if they were unclear about what they needed to do, or had a lack of resources on which to call. They had legal advice, they had the money and they acted in a way that got them what they wanted... a healthy white female nfant for adoption, the number one choice of prospective adopters.
Our family was completely TRAUMATIZED by ACW. I will be online tomorrow trying to get the story. How did you get a copy of the letter that was sent to them!? Any way I can get a copy? Finally, do you know if there will be class action suit? I'd really like to be kept in the loop as we have information about the agency to share. Please share more here if you can. Thanks.
It's about time. . .
If this person would have actually read the letter supposedly in front of them they would see that it is only "proposed" and the agency has the right to appeal. Also is fully licensed during the lengthy appeal process. It is obvoius this person has a personal hidden agenda and is not publishing facts here. I have also seen the letter and her explanation of the complaints are ridiculous and inaccurate. Especially that about "encouraging parents to runa nd hide with children whose adoptions are being contested". That allegation is absurd and totally false...and the agency was NEVER cited on that. So to clarify... the agency license is still in effect and NOT REVOKED.
Can you verify this? I am more than excited to hear this as it has been a terrible experience for me and my husband, ending in a disrupted adoption. I can tell you a friend of mine was given a call from the state yesterday that her adoption had been turned over to the state.
Too little, too late. So much heartbreak for so many people.
Yes I can verify it. You will see in the Akron newspaper tomorrow. I have a copy of the letter in front of me now. There is 12 pages to this letter. There is 20 violations. There must have been over fifty complaints from all sides of the adoption triad.
Again, i have seen the letter. If you actually read it and know what your reading...the complaints are from the same handful of people...not 50. Also, if you look at the high number of clients served..(placed nearly 1500 kids)... the percentage of compaints is very low.
Low complaints. I don't think so. Don't worry I will have the letter posted all over the internet. This agency is entering an adjudication order to revoke their certification of the agency and deny application for recertification for this agency.
This agency has hurt adoptees, birth parents and adoptive parents. Handful of folks. No I don't think so. I am part of a huge blogging community of adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents. The Judge threw out the case. Check the newspaper or call/email the court.
I am sorry Stephanie regretted her decision, but that had nothing to do with this agency. She had her daughter for a few months before deciding adoption was the best choice fo her.
PLEASE LOOK AT OHIO'S ADOPTION LAWS!!!! THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE ONCE THE FINAL PAPERS ARE SIGNED!
Can you imagine if it was legal for BM's to "get their child back"??? Who would EVER take a chance & adopt if it was legal for the BM to return & take THEIR child!

It seems to me there are the same 2 or 3 people posting horrid things about this agency. It doesn't take a genius to connect the dots to recent case in which the court ruled in favor of this agency.
