We used Special Delivery (via Lifeline in Alabama). The people who run SD are the children of the missionaries who are actually at the orphanage (well, part of the year anyway). The information received is often misleading. When questioned on details, the staff can become defense-driven and often take out their personal agendas in order to keep their good name. I would definitely not recommend using them.
I have only one question, Did you ever talk to Special Delivery in person or did you just rely on Lifeline? My experience with Special Delivery has been if anything positive. Many times when information is given it has been given to the agencies falsly by the people in Guatemala. How does anyone know if someone is telling the truth or not? Special Delivery is very honest and if you were not able to talk to them directly, you didn't get the whole story and you have no room to complain.
While I can see where you're coming from, actually we had a LOT of room to complain. We got some of our information DIRECTLY from SD. We used several back doors including connections in country, an outside agency and others to get involved in our situation.
Through outside sources, we verified that the info that was incorrect was, in fact, coming from Special Delivery. It was deliberately misleading. There are MANY other families who have had the same situation, and some are going through it right now (and just don't know all the facts). While SD has been honest with some people, it has not with others. I realize that is difficult to process but it is absolutely true.
