I want to start out by saying the ladies that work her at Holt are really nice, but they knew what our situation is and how far along we were in the adoption process, which was just beginning. We did find a little girl that we wanted to adopt and they still said ok lets get the paperwork filled out. We filled out all this paperwork and talked many times. I think that if they had told us in the beginning that we didn't have enough time to get everything submitted that we would have continued the process. After they did the application review they said that we were not matched because we didn't have enough time to get the paperwork done in time and also because they didn't think we were able to take care of a child with down syndrome (they pushed that a lot). Now I am getting the bill for the $300 application fee. I think that they kept the process going just to get the money in the end. I don't recommend using them.
That said, it remains the most economical way to achieve.
That said, it remains the most economical way to achieve the desired sound when the original CD Master. Typically, it is more expensive to get back in the Mixing to rebuild or repair parts of it before the final mix for download stereo.
We used Holt for both of our China adoptions. Our first daughter was one year old at the time of adoption and was through the regular program, and our second child was 5 years old and had special needs. I can honestly say that from the very first phone call, through all the mounds of paperwork, to in-country travel, and post-adoption issues, we don't have a single complaint. Not one. Extraordinary when you think of all the possible things that can go wrong within the framework of international adoption. I highly recommend Holt...loved every part of our adoption process.
Happy about Holt
My wife and I recently completed an India adoption with Holt. I'm very happy that the staff at Holt, Oregon were so helpful to us in the process.
We were completely new to parenthood, so wasted few years with the fear of how this adoption would work out for us. Holt prepared us though training which gave us a lot of courage. We also trusted God in his promises. They are excellent in completing the correct paperwork, and making sure the papers are filed at the right time and to the right people. We needed some additional information about the Child which they provided to us following the protocol of the India office.
To all who are considering adoption, I recommend Holt International. There are so many things which can go wrong in the adoption process. The agency would do their best to provide information and leave the decision to us. Holt has done that exact job. They are honest, but don't take their opinion on the health and development of the Child. I used my own doctor to get opinions.
Holt International New Jersey Office BEWARE
Murielle Elfman the Executive Director of the New Jersey office had a habit of back peddling and not speaking the truth to us or the Oregon office. She's on a power trip and took great pleasure in canceling our adoption.
Caution when dealing with her. Use email as much as possible and not the telephone.
Keep a strong paper trail.
I can not say enough good things about Holt's China program. From the first day into the program to a year after coming home with our daughter, Holt has always been there for us. I still can pick up the phone and ask questions and everyone is very helpful. Holt organized the in country trips and escorts for each family. They were wonderful with suppling all information and phone chats with other families prior to leaving for China. We already connected with families before we left the states. The care we received during our stay was excellent. I could not have imagined going thru the adoption process without an escort. Every detail was well thought out. Thank you to Holt for everything and I will forever recommend Holt to all that are considering adoption!
Update on Holt
Traveling to Seoul to meet the son we had waited 3 1/2 years. We had prayed for our son, underwent physical testing, home studies, referrals, classes & pediatricians. Preparing for him just made us one step closer. Just counting down the days seemed like more years adding up but we knew the wait was so worth it. Our son Jack, Gym Beoul was to be ours and we were to be his forever. His pictures adorned our house and I started to wash his clothes and pack for our journey to Seoul.
Holt International & Holt Korea approved us being parents to our sweet baby boy.
We had problems with the Executive Director in the New Jersey office, she became angry with us because we caught her in lies. So much so we tape recorded our last meeting with her. She had the power to end our relationship with our son. We hired an attorney, we have contacted our Senators there is nothing that can be done to reclaim our son because the contract you sign has a clause that you can never sue Holt International and at any time they can walk away from the adoption without reason.
The contract is over reaching denying the U.S. Constitutions right for due process and specifies that under no circumstances are you allowed to enter the judicial process.
Our baby is gone, our hearts are broken and we will always have an empty crib for our little angel.
My tale is to make all aware. Holt International has ended all of our son's rights for love, happiness, education, a home and future we promised him.
Be Very Careful, Under Investigation
Be very careful with this agency......after years, emotional investment and the referral of our son they changed their minds for unethical reasons.
They are now under investigation.
I would never want another parent to feel the pain, betrayal & grieving after Holt's many mistakes.
Holt Intl is very lousy
Holt International feeds you lies and is basically a very bad agency. I had a horrible experience, lost the child we would have adopted due to their miscommunication and on top of that they told me that I should not adopt because I was not ready. I ended up adopting from another agency immediately after that - it took 9 months, it was very successful and my child is thriving. If you want a corporate institution which hoodwinks you go to Holt
We adopted a fantastic child from India, using Holt International as our adoption agency. We were very happy with Holt's services. They know what they are doing and we were well informed throughout the process. We were frequently sent updates, pictures, and videos of our child. Our child was escorted by a Holt employee, and he was very kind and gentle to our son. We would highly recommend Holt.
Some staff members at Holt were great. Others were mediocre at best. It was hit and miss. Some were responsive to quick replies to emails while others were not. I found some of the typed instructions unclear and/or conflicting and sometimes, you don't find out about something unless you know to ask specially about it.
If you decide to choose this agency, you should 1) be proactive 2) have a clear understanding of what you're doing 3) be able to navigate through the adoption process independently. I went through a China adoption. I consider myself to be fairly intelligent, able to take direction and show initiative where necessary. While I understand that an organization might be large, I still believe in quality customer service and in my opinion, it is up to the *company* to be proactive and take the initiative in making contact with adoptive parents at every step, follow up to regularly check-in even if no questions have been raised and not always leave the ball in the corner of the adoptive parents. The act of adoption isn't a business transaction but let's face it - an adoption agency is a business and we are the clients. I would like to say that I felt like a valued client.
This is my first adoption so I don't have any other agencies to compare it to but if I were to adopt a second, I would not use this agency again.
Love Holt! Wonderful agency.
Love Holt! Wonderful agency. Professional, well organized, always there for you. We did 2 adoptions out of our 4 with Holt and would do another in a heart beat. Simply the best agency.
Using Holt for the second time
I agree with everything in the 'Holt Invented International' post. We used Holt for our China adoption and were completely pleased with how everything went. Prior to signing with them we heard their vice president of programs speak and she really knew her information- even to knowing which countries won't work with prospective parents in certain employment fields. They are the leader and are commtted to finding families for children, not children for families. We found them to be responsive to communication and we always received a call/email back within 24 hours. They didn't "hold our hand" but they were available to answer any questions we had throughout the process. We are now using them for our Ethiopian adoption and I expect the same level of profesionalism and ethics that they have exhibited in their other programs.
There are many single families that have used Holt, but there are fewer and fewer countries allowing singles so their hands are tied in many cases
If you are a heterosexual couple you may stand a chance at completing an adoption. Displays highly unethical practices toward single adoptive parents. Personally, I would recommend using an agency that does not openly promote discriminatory practices toward others!
Holt invented international
Holt invented international adoption over 50 years ago and serves as the model for all adoption agencies in this country. Furthermore, when other countries are setting up international adoption programs they usually ask for Holt's advice and assistance in doing so. In short, they really know what they are doing. They are very large and do not generally hold your hand through the process. But they know everything about international adoption - they have dealt with every possible complication many times over - and have the pull to fix things if things go awry. I also have the utmost confidence in Holt's ethics. They are in this for the children, not for the adoptive parents. This attitude comes through in everything they do. Prospective parents that want an agency that is going to cater more to their needs than the children's should look elsewhere.
We adopted from South Korea with Holt. We filed a preliminary application in 11/05, completed our extensive in-depth application (100 essay questions, medical checks, 4 detailed letters of reference, fingerprints, criminal checks, etc...) by Jan 2006. Only after that entire packet is completed will Holt sign you up for your homestudy. The social worker visited us in Feb. 2006, our homestudy went to Korea in April 2006. We received a referral in late December 2006, and arrived home with our 4 month and 3 week old son in March 2007.
The entire process went extremely smoothly because Holt knows exactly what they are doing. TWICE US-CIS erroneously kicked back our paperwork. And TWICE Holt had contacted the correct person in those bureaucratic organizations and had the situation fixed within 3 hours. I highly doubt smaller, less well-known agencies would have that kind of pull with US-CIS.
Holt has a very defined process, so you always know where you are and what comes next. IMHO, this means you do not need to call them as often as you would with other agencies.
Disadvantages to Holt, as I see them:
1) For Korea adoptions, their referral wait-times (after your home study is submitted) are significantly longer than other agencies. I mean 9 month waits versus 1 month for some agencies.
2) They are large. Though very responsive, their proactive communication could be better. They do send out a monthly update via email, but wouldn't you know it SPAM filters kept both me and my husband from receiving it. Basically, they send the email to too huge a list at a time, and Holt could remedy this by sending the mothly update in small groups. Despite our complaints, however, they did not fix the situation. Thus, we always had to call to get the update on the phone.
3) Their homestudy process puts all the burden on the adoptive parents. Despite our paying the California rate of $3K plus for our homestudy, we found that our social worker did little more for our home study report than cut/paste entire paragraphs from our answers to 110 essay questions in our application. She asked us no questions that were not already asked in the written application. Some agencies do not have 100+ essay question applications, and instead have you either write a 5 page autobiography or they just have the social worker interview you to complete the report.
I do think, however, that Holt's long application has benefits to parents in that it makes you really think through your decision to adopt and your answers well before meeting the social worker. I'm sure this results in home studies that are stronger overall.
Overall, Holt is first-class. I've been very, very impressed by them. They are perhaps the most efficiently run non-profit organization I have ever dealt with. They really know what they are doing.
Also, a word about Korean adoption in general. Our son is an absolute delight, developmentally ahead for his age, and has no attachment problems that we can detect. This is no doubt due to the unbelievably good medical care and foster care he received in Korea.
