We love New Horizons

We had an amazing experience adopting three children through New Horizons. Our social worker was amazing and helped us with every step of the journey. We had a very positive experience all three times and took placement quickly. They have a new director that is doing well for them. We are so thankful for them and all they have done for our family.

Our experience

We can only provide feedback from our personal experience with New Horizons Adoption Agency, specifically the owner and social worker located near Cedar Rapids Iowa.
Here is our experience with New Horizons Adoption agency. The first meeting was at the orientation and we found it informative. During the meeting the owner stated that her only concern was for the birth mother, the birth mother is the most important thing. While we thought this was refreshingly upfront, (several years later we truly realized the impact.) We selected New Horizons any way because of the cost and wanted to be affiliated with a Christian agency.
Matching you with a child: We had relative success getting matched with a birth mother, however we never placed with New Horizons Adoption Agency. We adopted our child through another agency who reached out to New Horizons for additional adoptive parents. So that is a plus because New Horizons networks, so you have a bigger opportunity to adopt.(These are usually in different states)
Communication after a failed match: We had two failed matches with New Horizons and both failed within two weeks of the baby’s due date. The first match we received a phone call, and then a standard monthly email letting us know that we are still being shown.
The second failed match was extremely difficult for my wife and I. We were matched 4 ½ months prior to the due date. For the failed match we received an email and that was it. After the next couple of months we would get a standard email that we were being shown. We received additional emails, because our home study was about to expire so we needed additional training.
Billing: When we signed up for the website profile we signed a contract that 500 would be deducted when placement was done. They sent us a bill for finalizing the home study placement and charged us for the full amount. When we questioned it, they acted like we were in the wrong. We had to scan the document signed by the owner along with our signatures stating the 500 would be deducted. They finally removed the amount
Follow up- is terrible with this agency. A couple weeks prior to our baby’s adoption date we needed paperwork from them. This missing paperwork was putting the adoption in jeopardy of being delayed several months. My wife had to make multiple calls to get the right paperwork. After this was done, we had to have a conversation with the owner because she wanted to see if we would be good fit for her agency. She didn’t like us following up so much. I guess the adoption of our daughter is a low priority to them.
Incorrect information: There were several instances that the social worker provided us with incorrect information. For example, we thought we were agreeing to being shown to birth mother in Missouri, when it was Mississippi.
The largest issue caused us from no longer working with this agency. We received word of a match. Mother was in Iowa, so no interstate compacts and father was not involved. A week later we received word that the birth mother didn’t like the maternity home and they were looking to move her.
A week later we met with the agency owner and birth mother at a restaurant.
One of the first things the owner stated was:
This is not verbatim but pretty close. We are moving her to MN because the laws for reporting are beneficial. Then she stated, there are other reasons and the main reason is because it will be easier for me(owner).
During the conversation she stated that the birth mother’s family was not aware of the pregnancy and she has been living in a maternity home.
After the meeting we called our social worker to ask why were not told about the move and we had concerns about the statement regarding reporting for the father. Was there an issue with the birth father? During this time we found out the birth mother was living with her brother and was not supportive of the adoption prior to the face to face meeting.
My wife had I had several emails with the business and we never received a satisfactory answer regarding why were told inaccurate information regarding were she was living. And we never received any acknowledgement why the agency owner stated they are moving the birth mother because of MN laws.
Compassion- We never experienced any from this agency. We have told our experience to other adoptive parents and they cannot believe on the lack of follow up after failed matches.
When we were going through our last home study, the social asked us on how we were doing. I started to state on how we felt that close to waiting for 5 months is too long and that to only get an email stating the birth mother changed her mind is “Cruel”. However, we didn’t get to say those things without her interrupting. We were looking for compassion from a Christian agency but only received an excuse.
This is a review of our experience of New Horizons Adoption agency and should not influence your decision.

Nothing but wonderful

We adopted domestically through New Horizons a few months ago and they are absolutely wonderful. They are honest about expectations, they communicate effectively and their fees are almost 1/2 of many other agencies. And they are a strong Christian ageny. We will hopefully be adopting again soon and we are planning to use them again and for any adoptions we might be able to be a part of.
